Hair and tear.

So this is a very personal post I’m going to do on natural hair- specifically my hair.

My natural hair, in a completely different atmosphere- specifically while studying abroad in Spain.

Since January, I’ve had a weave. For those of you that may be confused (? lol), my real hair is braided with tracks of hair sewn on it, and a piece of my real hair is left out to blend with the fake hair for a more realistic look.

And it’s killing me slowly.

I’ve realized that I haven’t been myself for the past 2 weeks because the weave is reeeaallly wearing me down. It’s a LOT of time and work to do my own hair with such limited natural supplies here (the market is not very high for Black people), but anything other than my own hair twisted or in an afro is soooo trying. And straightening the little bit of real hair I left out is making me slightly depressed.

Not to get too deep into race issues, but I feel like once a black woman learns to appreciate&deal with her natural hair texture, going back to perms and constant flat irons constant is like 100 steps back. It took me forever to realize kinky-specifically the texture of my hair- is beautiful, and now I’m trying to beat it, heat it, and kill it to blend with some Indian hair? Riiiiight…

It isn’t me. And as a result, I haven’t been myself, I just don’t even feel like who I really am. Waking up to tame this is not fun at all. Buuuut I can’t change this for another week (at least), because of my schedule and the fact that we can’t shower for very long here (don’t ask lol).

I just can’t wait to get back to looking and feeling like me. My confidence and mood are just forever at blaaahhh.

Don’t know if I’ll address this on my travel blog, but it’s something that other black women might want to know before they move across the world.
